With energy prices on the rise and a need for more natural home building materials, underground homes are becoming (albeit slowly) a so-called “new” way to save energy costs and build homes that are durable, provide protection from the weather, and are very energy efficient, too. Green Homes

Although underground homes have been a means of building homes since almost the beginning of time, and “dugouts” were often used in the 1700 and 1800s by settlers when they first settled this country because they were easy to construct and very protected from the elements, they have not been a common means to build homes as a matter of course. Different ways to build underground homes

·    Earth berming

With “earth berming,” the home is not actually underground; instead earth is piled up against exterior walls and then packed down to slope away from the house. This type of design has fewer moisture problems than do traditional underground homes.

·    In hill construction

In this setup, the home is built into the side of a hill with the front of the house facing outward; in most cases, three sides of the house are completely set into the hill, with the fourth side facing outward.

·    Fully recessed

Healthy Home – With this type of home, the ground is dug out and the house itself is entirely set in below grade. There’s usually an atrium or courtyard constructed in the middle of the house so that adequate light and ventilation is available.
