It is common for preparatory schools in London to accept children from as young as 3 years old, however the most common age group for prep school attendance is 8-13, which covers school years 4-8 in the UK system. Entry into preparatory schools in normally based on having an interview with the Headmaster or Principal, and the school receiving good reports from the previous school (not necessarily evidence of outstanding academic achievement, more related to interest and attitude).

It is not uncommon for schools to sit basic examinations in the core subjects of Mathematics and English, including verbal and numerical reasoning. It is common to join the prep school at the age of 8, right through until 13.

Fewer places are available for pupils joining at other times, and therefore it is harder to join in year 7 which is the standard year that secondary schools start. If it is possible to join in year 7, the entrance requirements are usually more academic since the school will be focussing on preparing the students for Common Entrance exams at 12/13, where pupils join schools in year 9 entry.

Prep schools in London focus on the 8-13 range, preparing pupils for entrance into Public Schools (private, fee paying schools) at 13+ through the Common Entrance system.   In recent years, there have been more independent London prep schools taking students until 11 to match the state primary age grouping. Children move on to the senior schools for year 8 (age 11+) in some prep schools now. Traditional boarding schools still run the senior school from age 13-18, however.

Typically, independently educated boys will go to a pre-prep school from ages 4/5 to 8, to a prep school from age 8 to 13, and to a public school 13 to age 18.

Girls’ independent schools in London have a tendency to stick to the age ranges of state primary and secondary schools than those for boys. A girl’s prep school will generally take children from age 5 to 11, and independent girls schools after prep school will often begin at age 11 and continue to age 18, with no general age 13 intake.

Most prep schools prepare children for Common Entrance examinations, taken at 11+, 12+ or 13+ for entry to independent senior boarding or day schools. Some schools, particularly London day private schools set their own entrance exams. Provision of places in senior schools may well affect the destination of pupils after they leave prep schools in London and therefore the focus of academic tuition may be affected also.

It is advisable to inform the school of your child’s destination choices 2 years before the end of the prep school, so that they can help the pupil prepare for the next school in the best way. Some prep schools may have excellent links between the prep and senior schools, affecting the destination of the pupils. Most students at Westminster School in London continue to the Westminster Senior School for example, and Colet Court is the preparatory school for St Paul’s School in London.

Pupils are normally only split into different class teachers from age 9, when subject specialist teachers will teach them.    There are regular informal and internal examinations to monitor the academic progress, and also feedback for the sporting development of the pupils at most prep schools in London. Nothing is worse than trying to take a test but always be having another voice telling you that you’ll never pass, you don’t know the answers etc. It is very important for exam training study to feel confident, stop negative self-statements and believe in your abilities. If you prepare ahead of time, write down the areas where you feel weak. These are good to discuss with someone ahead of time whether it’s a tutor, ta, your teacher or another student. This will help you not get stuck in negative thoughts.

When you take the test, if you are unsure of a question , move on and then come back to it later. Don’t get hung up in putting yourself down but just move on to the other questions. Expect that there may be some tricky questions or areas you are stuck, but don’t let this erode your sense of self and your abilities.

Before the exam, get ample sleep and use stress reduction techniques such as slow breathing, visualizing a beautiful scene and how you believe in yourself. If there are people in your life that criticize you, try to let them know you need encouragement or stay away for a bit if it is very damaging to you.
